Club chairs are similar to armchairs except they are usually slimmer and simpler. Generally upholstered in leather, club chairs were named as such after their rise to fame in Gentlemen's Clubs in 19th Century England. A good, attractive club chair is a lovely seating piece in a reception room, study or empty corner of most rooms. As with armchairs, you can find recliner club chairs.
And then there are chairs to relax on, like your armchairs, rocking chair, wing back chairs or a chaise longue. These are slightly more expensive and are optional, but if you have the budget for it you can go ahead and invest in one. They are growing in popularity in homes nowadays due to the growing affluence of the population, and some designs can cost upwards of a few thousand. They can be found in any room of your house.
The most popular of these chairs were the ones made so by the cavaliers who had been exiled by Charles II. During the reign of William and Mary these chairs degenerated into chairs that were more stiff and rectangular with a solid fiddle shaped splat and a cabriole leg with pad feet. Chairs that were a bit more ornamental had cane seats and caned backs. It is from these forms that the Chippendale chair was developed. This chair had an elaborately interlaced back, graceful arms and square legs. The Chippendale chair to this day is one of the most popular designs in history. It was created by Thomas Chippendale who lived from 1718 to 1779. He was one of the big three furniture makers of the 18th century along with Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite. In 1754 he published a book of his designs which included the Chippendale chair design.
Do not think that modern chairs only need to be used in a dining room. There are so many other ways that they can be utilized. Some are made to look like modern pieces of art that should not be shoved under a dining table. The look of a sitting room, bedroom or office can be made to look better when one is added for extra seating.
